Prep: 15 mins - Total: 1 hr 5 mins
1-1/4 cups warm (108°F) water
1 pkg. active dry yeast
1 Tbsp. shortening
1 Tbsp. sugar
2 tsp. salt
3 cups sifted flour, divided
Melted butter or margarine
Pour warm water into large mixing bowl. Sprinkle yeast over water; stir until dissolved. Let stand 5 minutes.
Add shortening, sugar, salt and 1-1/2 cups of the flour. Beat 2 minutes at medium speed of electric mixer or 300 vigorous strokes by hand, scraping sides and bottom of bowl frequently. Stir in remaining flour.
Scrape batter from sides of bowl; cover with clean towel. Let rise in warm place, free from draft, until doubled in volume, about 30 minutes.
Stir down batter with wooden spoon; spread evenly into greased 9x5-inch loaf pan. (Batter will be sticky.) Let rise in warm place, free from draft, until edge of batter reaches about 1/4 inch from top of pan, about 40 minutes.
Bake at 375°F for 45 to 50 minutes or until crust is golden brown. Remove bread from pan immediately to wire rack; brush top with melted butter. Cool completely.
