Blackberry Dumplings

Oh man  :)

1 gallon fresh blackberries
2 cups sugar
1 cup water
1 1/2 cups all purpose flour
2 tbsps. baking powder
3/4 tsp. salt
3 tbls. crisco shortening
3/4 cup milk

In a large pot, bring blackberries, sugar and water to a boil. Continue to boil over medium heat for 45 minutes to an hour until blackberries reach a light, syrupy consistency. In a separate bowl, blend dry ingredients. Cut in shortening with pastry knife until dough is coarse in texture. Add milk and blend with a spoon. When berries have cooked to a syrupy consistency, drop dumpling dough by spoonfuls into the pot. Cook uncovered for 10 minutes. Put lid on pot and cook another 10 minutes. Remove dumplings from hot syrup. Serve in a bowl, topped with the  xooked blackberries and syrup. Any leftover blackberries and syrup can be refrigerated to use like preserves.
